Greatest Living Drummer Comes to Cyprus

Some exciting news for music fans in Cyprus, on 12th December – Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer performs for one night only at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol. Carl Palmer loves Cyprus and spends around half the year on the island in the apartment that he owns in Limassol. He told the Cyprus Mail that the band tours for around five months a year and he spends the remaining months in Limassol. It’s the perfect setting for him as he loves skiing and walking in the Troodos mountains. “It’s beautiful in Troodos”, says Palmer, “I actually first went there in 1999 because I heard it was an easy place for skiing, but I really love walking there and in villages such as Lofou.”

Palmer is credited as one of the most respected rock drummers to emerge from the 1960s and those with a long enough memory will know he is a veteran of a number of famous English bands, including the ‘Crazy World of Arthur Brown’, ‘Atomic Rooster’, ‘Emerson, Lake & Palmer’ of course, and ‘Asia’.

Emerson Lake and Palmer was famous for its unique mixture of rock and classical music, which created stunning, wall-to-wall set pieces. Palmer is heavily influenced by classical artists and even tried to organise a concert with the Cyprus State Orchestra but found it impossible to get the venture off the ground. “I spent nearly three and a half years trying to explain the concept, it would have been a great platform for this music and something new for the state orchestra to try, it would have bridged a gap between rock and classical, but sadly we never got anywhere near getting the idea off the ground.”

When Palmer left Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake kept the show going by drafting in the late Cozy Powell, but next year the band in its original form will be back on stage. “It will be the first time we have played together in 14 years, so I’m greatly looking forward to it.”

The Limassol concert will mix iconic early tunes and new works and will be a real treat for music fans everywhere - a rare chance to see a living legend in full swing on stage. “We plan to do a pretty varied set,” Palmer says, “We’ll perform some EMP pieces and some original tracks, so it should be a really varied show. I have two great guitarists with me, both of whom are exceptional players.”

Carl Palmer will be in concert on Saturday, 12th December at the Rialto Theatre, Limassol at 8.30pm.
