Open Air Film Festival
There’s a real treat in store for you if you’re a film buff and will be in the Larnaca area over the next week. The Sophia Loren Open Air Film Festival opens this evening, Monday 5th October with a grand cocktail party at 6.30pm next to the Finikoudes Seafront Stage and it will continue until 11th October.
The opportunity to watch Sophia Loren classics from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, under the stars on a balmy October evening in Cyprus has been organised by the Regional Tourism Body, with the support of the Cyprus Tourist Organisation, as part of its events calendar for 2009. Sophia Loren fans can choose from three of her most classic films, the 1958 romantic comedy ‘Houseboat’, the 1964 epic ‘The Fall of the Roman Empire’, and the 1976 disaster movie ‘The Cassandra Crossing’.
Costas Papacharalambous, Senior Officer of Larnaca’s Regional Tourism Body, said, “This is something unusual and something new.” He added that the films of iconic star Sophia Loren were chosen because they were amongst the best examples of films that epitomised Mediterranean passion and were classic greats from the 30-year period that covers the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
The Open Air Film Festival is a bit of an experiment, but if it becomes popular, then it may well become a regular feature in Larnaca. So why not go along to support it and enjoy yourself. The films all start at 7.00pm, entrance is FREE and so are the drinks and popcorn!
Three screenings will take place by the Finikoudes Sea Front Stage, two in the Oroklini – Dhekelia area (by the Blue Flag Beach) and two in Lefkara (by the Town Hall Square). Here’s the full schedule:-
